It was 58% to 42% last week, with people who might be dressed any old way - or no way- while blogging, over those that are always fully dressed. I'm of the former group. When you llive alone, you might as well be comfortable, eh? Besides when you're writing, comfort is job #1. At least for me.
In fact, I'm just half dressed right now. Big deal. I'll put a shirt on later.
This week's poll is, once again, a no -clicker. The number of possible answers is way to large, so this is a free-range, essay type poll! Here 'tis:
What one law would you change? How would you change it, and why?
Go nuts.

that's easy! i'd make marijuana legal - medically and otherwise! hey, it's no worse that alcohol! and they go hand in hand....if one's legal, so should the other one be legal!

My "change" would be to enforce existing laws, particularly the vehicle codes. We could stop some of the senseless road deaths if we gave a higher priority to this. If we can only have X number of cops, I want them out on the streets, ticketing fuckheads driving BMWs, not pretending to be 14 year old girls on the 'net. It's crazy that we accept 40,000+ deaths a year due to auto accidents (not to mention injuries)! Other than that, Dawn's idea is cool, man.

So many laws, so little time. If i had to change just 1 it would have to be to make hunting illegal.

Lucy - at least for Dick Cheney, eh?

Well, Joe did say "Go nuts." If it wasn't for the millions of hunters (and fishers - neither of which I am, FTR), we wouldn't have near the amount of public forest land that we ALL enjoy today.
But I digress...
I would have all state legislatures and the U.S. Congress be required to devote the first quarter of their session to UNmaking laws that are on the books. This could be acheived by getting a plurality of voters to agree to it in a national referendum (aka ratification of a Constitutional Amendment). Why? Shit...

O'Tim- Have you read Heinlein's "The Moon is a Harsh Mistresss"? There are some ideas in that I think you will like. I can arrange for you to get it very quickly and easily, if you are inclined.

the death penalty, it would have to go, if i was in charge. it is imposed disproportionately on minorities and the poor, mentally ill... have innocent people been executed? yes. this alone is enough for me to want this barbaric practice to stop.

I would immediately repeal the recent law authorizing the president to decide what is torture and what is not. The same law guts our constitution and repeals some hard-won civil rights, like the right to habeas corpus.
If you had asked a few months ago, I would say repeal the Patriot Act.
If you had asked before that, I would go for decriminalizing marijuana, which I would still like to do.

Wow, Miss C, you got 'em all lined up (and I concur)!
Yes Joe - put up a torrent. I have not read that Heinlein book.

Laws to change... hmmm, well to keep it at a non-rant level, I would have to say the seatbelt law. Before anyone tries to ring me for this one... seatbelts have lost nearly as many lives as they have saved. For children I would have it mandatory, but it should be an optional decision for adults. Just my opinion... but having grown up in an era of no seatbelts... it changes your perspective. Those who did not live or drive in that era may not understand it.

How does that work out then?

Lucy- they're the ones who lobby to keep these places away from the loggers and strip miners. The "treehuggers" can't do it all themselves, you know.... :-)
Phoenix - thanks for coming by. Welcome! I read a news item a couple years ago about a guy who was driving without his seatbelt in a convertable when he hit another vehicle. His car was smashed, but he was thrown in the air. Here's the kicker....... he bounced on telephone wires 2 or 3 times before landing on them without a scratch. That's aa guy thaat should play Powerball.
 | | | O' Tim October 17, 2006 09:19 PM PDT
Lucy - mind you, this treehugger is infuriated by irresponsible redneck gun-toters probably as much as he holds safe and sane hunters in respect.
On what is your desire to make hunting illegal based - animal cruelty? Heck, then let's start with the slaughterhouses and the puppy mills.
As the desire (need) to hunt goes back to the dawn of man, I don't believe it will be purged in the evolutionary cycle anytime soon, so suffice it to say that I find unrealistic any desire to make hunting illegal.
Now, about getting Congress to start abolishing laws... ;)
 | | | Monica October 18, 2006 08:33 AM PDT
I would change the law that allows pedophiles to get out early based on good behavior. Of course they have good behavior, there are no children in their prisons.
 | | | Joe the Troll October 18, 2006 09:58 AM PDT
Monica- that is an excellent point. They aren't curable, yet they are let out to make room for drug users who ARE curable, so they can serve their mandatory sentence w/o parole.

People already used my ideas!
a. Legalize marijuana completely
b. Repeal seatbelt and motorcycle helmet laws
c. Require any legislator to propose repeal of three laws before he or she can submit one
d. Okay, here's my contribution (shows where my mind's at): Ensure that all sexual / intimate relations between adults are legal without regard to the nature of the relationship, except where it brings material harm to people outside the relationship (e.g. streetwalking in residential neighborhoods).
 | | | Lucyp October 18, 2006 02:53 PM PDT
O'Tim - Animal cruelty would be a worthy cause and as a vegetarian i would have no problem closing down slaughterhouses except then that would make me one of those bigots who try and force others into their own personal viewpoint, and although that is not as bad as hunting, its damn annoying.
I have no desire to hunt, has it been purged through my personal evolution?

"I have no desire to hunt, has it been purged through my personal evolution? "
