I'll remember my mom watching his talk show. She had that freakin' tv on all day, between soaps, Mike Douglas, and Merv. No wonder I'm a tv junkie.

Hell, yes, it was lame as hell. Both had just mediocre voices, like some bargain-basement Sinatra. But both were charismatic and light. I still remember watching Lennon on Douglas's show. Killed. And Mrs. Miller on Merv. WHat FUN she was! | |

There were two Mis. Millers, actually. One Mrs. Miller was ALWAYS in Merv's audience, and he acknowledged her often. The other one was some old lady who covered pop songs badly, sort of a female William Shatner, but with a soprano voice. She butchered that Petula Clark song, "Downtown." | |

Cavett just did the same with some of his best interviews. They showed he Hitchcock interview on TVLand, but you didn't miss anything if you've read Truffault's book. | |

My most favorite Merv Griffin moment actually doesn't have him. It was the SCTV spoof hybridizing Merv with Andy Griffith, into the Merv Griffith show.
Second place has to be his bit in <b>Man With Two Brains</b>.

If you have iTunes, you can listen to a clip there. SEarch Mrs. Miller and you'll find "Downtown" as well as other songs she butchered. My dad had that album and we used to laugh our asses off listening to her. (Yellow Submarine is also really, really bad.) | |

Really good post. I'm not afraid to admit that I was raised on country, even though I grew up in the city. Patsy Cline was my all time fav but I loved all those oldies. I watched Hee Haw right along with my Grandma and laughed like hell, when grandma would get up and dance and carry on like Minnie Pearl. Those were the good ol days, weren't they? | |
