One of the reasons I've shied away from Libertarianism.

National defense is the job of the Federal government. Public health is the job of state and local governments. Libertarianism says that the state and local governments can do a better job on most issues than a centralized federal bureaucracy. Anarchy, now that's a different story.
Jefe September 12, 2007 04:21 PM PDT I thought libertarianism said, "Dude, give me a hit." That's what always appealed to me. All this talk about national defense and public health makes me want to go back to being a liberal.
I was a Libertarian for ten years, and getting rid of such luxuries as the Dept. of Health was definitely on the local platform. As was the idea that the EPA did nothing but "set acceptable standards for pollution." Tell that to the Bald Eagle.
The whole idea is that the people can use lawyers to keep corporations in line, and we know that just isn't going to work in practice. Especially since you have to wait for something bad to happen first.In fact, most of the Libs I knew weren't that far from anarchists.
Don't get me wrong, I still would like to see all government pared back in many ways, but I've come to the attitude that the Libs may just want to carry that a mite too far.
