Ever wonder why our courts are jammed and justice is often slow?
Hmm. Maybe this could shed some light on the matter.
I can hear the Asst. D.A. addressing the grand jury now. "An onion is considered a deadly weapon if and only if the grand jury determines that an onion can cause serious injury or death when used as a weapon."
Yeesh.
Don't get me wrong - this is certainly a poor way to treat your half-your-age trophy wife. Is it worthy of arrest, however?

Well, the article (if one could call it that) did say the woman reported that the onion "made her head hurt."
Come to think of it, this report makes my head hurt. Therefore I think I should call the police to have you, the reporter, the news service which carried this item, and the two parties involved arrested.
That'll learn ya.

Should he have been arrested if he slapped her in the back of the head instead? He was drunk and angry and the closet thing he had was an onion, would it be different if the projectile had been a brick?
The article doesn't say if the onion bounced or was smashed, so I don't know how hard he threw it. However, it's well documented that these types of things escalate over time and this might not be the first time he's hit her with anything.
I'd also like to note that the first time my ex ever showed any violence toward me he poured a beer on me. Not very harmful physically, but it certainly warned of things to come.

Yes. Bricks are hard.
I'm not saying she should ignore it, but an arrest seems overboard. This would no doubt be a good time for these folks to separate, perhaps divorce. But "Assault with an onion?" It seems there are sufficient cases of actual harm for the justice system to deal with, no? | |

I guess. I don't know. I see what Jenny's saying though. OTOH, you can't protect everyone from everything. This is that woman's sign to GET OUT NOW. My ex pushed me, once, and I left. It wasn't anything that bad, and didn't really hurt, but still. It was the out-of-control factor thingie. Plus, he was nutz anyway. | |

Since in many of the cases the female won't press charges because she loves him or she is afraid of the brick he will throw when he gets out, some states have passed mandatory arrest laws. If the cops are called, someone goes to jail. These are GREAT laws and need to be made into federal mandates. | |

I'm not sure I agree. A friend of mine was hauled off to jail because he slammed a kitchen cabinet door shut during an argument with his wife. Luckily, the cabinet didn't press charges.
I'm all for protecting women, but I'm also for having some common sense while arresting people. | |
