The common and continual mischiefs of the spirit of party are sufficient to make it the interest and duty of a wise people to discourage and restrain it.

Agree Joe. People are not interested in ideas - they are interested in hearing cheerleaders for their side telling them over and over again that they are right. Especially in the blogosphere.

This whole proces could be so fun if people wwere simply willing to address what is said instead of pushing the irrelevant tangents. And it would be nice if people like your expectorating friend were competent to disagree with anything remotely akin to civility, and were able to support a point for a change..

Man, it's ONLY the internet. Whoever wrote whatever ticked you off is probably covered in zits, and picking his/her nose while eating out of a grocery-store ice cream container and drinking Busch light. HOW can you let them get under your skin?

two things:
1- irrelevant tangents can be fun sometimes.
2- did i miss expectoration?

People who get all sweary and upset and direct personal insults towards others on the blogosphere really crack me up. One can only speculate there's a rather large 'life-sized' (like, say, a life) in their, erm, life, if mere disagreement on a political/religious/social topic can move them to such emotion.

I;m with you there. If people can't act like adults, and the owner of the blog either can't or won't mederate, then I'm at the point of just avoiding that place altogether.

"and the owner of the blog either can't or won't mederate"

I don't moderate. Never did, never will. Not my farooking job to be zookeeper, man. Paula doesn't moderate either. Look what's going on with that asshole Billo.

If peeps want to act like assholes at my site, let 'em. Who cares?

Looking at my screen, I see ... ME !

As I've said previously, we need free speech so we know who the assholes are.

Perhaps "moderate" was the wrong word. Obviously, I don't have things set up so that I have to read a comment before it is posted, and the only comment I ever deleted was my own, which was posted more than once for some reason. What I meant was guiding the tone of the blog. We've had some big disagreements here, and I've covered a few controversial subjects, but disagreements never get out of hand here, beecause that is the atmosphere I foster. Same with O'Tim. People will behave in places where they know it is expected of them, and where acting like an asshole will get them treated like one. The inmates don't run this asylum, I do.

I just wish I could find a way to ban anonymous comments, so that people who lack the courage of their convictions will have to identify themselves.

Hi - The "Not A Zookeeper" here.

I don't set a tone either. I'm with O'Tim - Free Speech For Assholes!

LOL

We set a tone, one way or another, just by the way we approach the blogging process.

Besides, I seem to remember you saying something like "This is MY blog, dammit!!" a few times. These are not the words of a guy who lets the inmates run the asylum. And that, I think, is a GOOD thing.

Once again, I am NOT talking about censorship. No one has ever had a comment deleted by me, and no one has been banned, or permanently unblogrolled. People just pick up on the fact that this is a place to discuss things like adults, even when there is strong disagreement, like there was in my "pride" post. How many blogs are there where I would have been called a "terrorist sympathiser" or "America hater" or somesuch for what I said in that post? Plenty. Here, we discuss the ISSUE, not the quality of the person, because that is the type of person this blog was set up to attract.

And for the record, EVERYONE, I am NOT suggesting that anyone anywhere change how they run their blog. That is up to them. I'm just pointing out something that I consider when choosing where and where not to spend my time and energy.

Hahahaha! I laugh because I believe I've just read the particular thread which spawned this post, Joe.

And I must say: That was absolutely typical, mate. I used to have the odd disagreement with this poor fellow and he never took kindly to it. In fact, in reaction to a couple of a our political differences, he spent the next 6 months or so posting derogatory comments about me on his own blog (some were subjective and therefore 'fair comment'; some were just objectively wrong and therefore technically libel).

I don't know why he'd expend so much energy on lil' ol' me... but he did. I concluded from this that he didn't like hearing other peoples' opinions when they clashed too severely with his own...

As if you didn't already realise this (and I'm sure you do), this is not your problem. It's most certainly his. A bit sad, but there you go...

Usually I think my commenters are great. I'm no fan of Anonymous though. That's cowardly and stupid. I had one a few weeks ago. Some idiot who said he was "afraid" to put a name cuz peeps might be mean and he didn't have his own blog in which to defend himself. That was about the lamest thing I've ever heard. But if someone like Billo wants to continue making an ass of himself, hey, who am I to interfere? I find it funny that out of my 200+ hits a day, NO ONE has agreed with him!
