Merv Griffin, another victim of prostate cancer.
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for Jeopardy.
Wheel of Fortune, not so much. |
| nat August 13, 2007 02:34 PM PDT LOL. And he even wrote that "Final Jeopardy" music! I'll remember my mom watching his talk show. She had that freakin' tv on all day, between soaps, Mike Douglas, and Merv. No wonder I'm a tv junkie. Hey, Joe, my podcast today is "Summertime Blues." See if you like any of the songs. | ||
| Joe the Troll August 13, 2007 02:36 PM PDT I saw that. I'll DL when I get home. All I have time for at work is in-depth posts like this one. Remember how Merv and Mike always started their shows with a song? Wasn't that just unconscionably lame? | ||
| nat August 13, 2007 02:40 PM PDT Hell, yes, it was lame as hell. Both had just mediocre voices, like some bargain-basement Sinatra. But both were charismatic and light. I still remember watching Lennon on Douglas's show. Killed. And Mrs. Miller on Merv. WHat FUN she was! | ||
| Miz UV August 13, 2007 03:04 PM PDT RIP, Mr. G. Jeopardy rocks! | ||
| Joe the Troll August 13, 2007 03:09 PM PDT Mrs. Miller? | ||
| nat August 13, 2007 03:14 PM PDT There were two Mis. Millers, actually. One Mrs. Miller was ALWAYS in Merv's audience, and he acknowledged her often. The other one was some old lady who covered pop songs badly, sort of a female William Shatner, but with a soprano voice. She butchered that Petula Clark song, "Downtown." | ||
| Jefe August 13, 2007 03:38 PM PDT Merv just put out a DVD compilation of some of the best moments from his show. That dude had some major, major personalities on there. I really want to get it. | ||
| Joe the Troll August 13, 2007 03:38 PM PDT Was it worse than Groundskeeper Willie's version? | ||
| Joe the Troll August 13, 2007 03:47 PM PDT Cavett just did the same with some of his best interviews. They showed he Hitchcock interview on TVLand, but you didn't miss anything if you've read Truffault's book. | ||
| Fez Monkey August 13, 2007 04:08 PM PDT My most favorite Merv Griffin moment actually doesn't have him. It was the SCTV spoof hybridizing Merv with Andy Griffith, into the Merv Griffith show. Second place has to be his bit in Man With Two Brains. Ook ook | ||

| nat August 13, 2007 07:07 PM PDT way WORSE than Groundskeeper Willie. I mean, WAY. | ||
| nat August 13, 2007 07:09 PM PDT If you have iTunes, you can listen to a clip there. SEarch Mrs. Miller and you'll find "Downtown" as well as other songs she butchered. My dad had that album and we used to laugh our asses off listening to her. (Yellow Submarine is also really, really bad.) | ||
| O' Tim August 13, 2007 07:52 PM PDT Mrs. Miller - she must be like Wing, the little Chinese lady they have on South Park. I sing songs to Max in my Wing voice. | ||
| Dirty Bitch Society August 17, 2007 05:12 PM PDT Really good post. I'm not afraid to admit that I was raised on country, even though I grew up in the city. Patsy Cline was my all time fav but I loved all those oldies. I watched Hee Haw right along with my Grandma and laughed like hell, when grandma would get up and dance and carry on like Minnie Pearl. Those were the good ol days, weren't they? | ||
