Entry: I'm from the Government and I know what's best. Wednesday, August 09, 2006

As expected, Joe Lieberman was routed in yesterday's primary election. And as expected, he says he will continue to run as an Independent.

I don't know if Massachusetts, like New Mexico, has closed primaries where only registered Democrats were able to vote in the primary. If so, perhaps he thinks he can attract enough DTSs and Republicans to pull off a win.

To quote O'Tim quoting Roger Daltry quoting Murray Head quoting some anonymous kid 85 years ago, "Say it ain't so, Joe".

This is exactly what I was talking about a few posts down. A lack of respect for the electoral process coming from the people involved in it. He has the right to do it, of course. It's perfectly legal. But it's tacky and it's wrong.

Lieberman, with this move, seems to be saying "I'm the right person for this job. I know I am. You voters are obviously just too stupid to see it, so I'll keep telling you."

The purpose of an election is to hear the voice of the people. To have the people themselves choose the candidate that they want to run for office. Sometimes, well, frequently, we will choose wrongly, but that is our right and the cross we must bear. The responsibility of the candidate is to respect that voice. Obviously, Joe Lieberman does not have that respect. He evidently thinks this is about his ego, and about getting the last word.

The people have spoken, Joe. Say your goodbyes and clear out your desk. I still have some boxes from my move if you need them.

He made his intentions to run independent clear way back in the campaign. He should get a prize for pissing off his base.

Yeah, he's been saying it all along. A lot of people were hoping he'd have a rectal craniectomy before now, though.

As someone who has shat on his own party so consistently, he should have jumped ship to the GOP a long time ago, and tried to get a nomination through them. Either that or pulled his tongue out of the back of Dubya's pants and slunk off to ignominious retirement. That one would have been preference.

I like him and would have voted for him, but I do feel embarrassed for him that he's doing this. Peeps need to learn to lose gracefully.

Paula- That's the true core of what I was saying. I don't have any particular feelings about the guy, but he should have more respect for the voters and the process, and simply accept the fact that for now, at least, his time is done.

States should have laws that prohibit this. It's not just tacky but also disruptive for a candidate to jump ship like this after a loss.

Joe's attempt at this "do-over" isn't going to help his party, but like Georgia's own Zell Miller, I doubt he will switch to the GOP because then he wouldn't get as much attention.

Poor Joe -

He tried so hard to play both sides against the middle, only to find that Democrat voters in Connecticut aren't stupid enough to keep swallowing all the lies and fear-mongering used as justification for the Iraq invasion. I mean, props to him to sticking to his position and his beliefs, but at this point he has to accept that Democrats aren't as gullible or blind as Republicans.

After he gets stomped like a rotten grape in the election, maybe he'll realize the truth. Til then, it's just sad.

Joe Lieberman was routed

52% vs. Lieberman's 48% is hardly a "rout".

At the time that this was written, those figures weren't out yet, or at least I didn't see them. That's how it was being portayed in the news. Besides, if a miss is as good as a mile, a loss iss as good as a rout.

Wrong guy, Joe. We in MA have Ted Kennedy. Nobody messes with Ted. ;)

I like Lieberman, if for no other reason than he does not let THE PARTY push him around.

IMHO, Lieberman and McKinney are both f*ckwits, in their own strange little ways... may they both sink without trace...

Okay, okay, I wrote this while making my first cup of tea, and wrote the wrong state. Honest mistake. Besides, I never claimed to care about any state east of Illinois, did I?

As for the rest, we'll see. I never tried to predict the outcome of the election. I just said that, in my opinion, Leiberman is behaving like a teacher in summertime.

Hey, like I said, caffiene makes by brain work, and I hadn't had any yet.

I still think Icerman or Leibergold or whatever is acting like a weenie, but then, "weenie" is part of his job description.

Maybe I should go with the Bill O'Reilly "I'm not a journalist so I don't have to get the facts right" defense................ :-)
